OpinionsEuropean Food Safety Authority reconfirms the safety of approved low calorie sweeteners. In a statement published on 28 February, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reconfirmed its opinion that aspartame and low calorie soft drinks are safe. EFSA had been asked to review two papers that had received publicity in France. The first paper, by an Italian group, claimed to have shown adverse effects of aspartame in mice, while the second, by a group of Danish researchers, questioned the safety of low calorie soft drinks during pregnancy. EFSA examined both papers and concluded that the information they contained did not provide a reason for it to reconsider its previous positive opinions of aspartame or of the approved low calorie sweeteners in soft drinks.
